YOUNG GUNS ON THE WORLD CHARGE

ON THE GREENS COLUMN WITH BRETT WILKIE

AUSTRALIA’S young guns continue to perform on the world stage at the Broadbeach Bowls Club this week.

Following two days of mixed pairs action at the World Youth Championships, Kristina Krstic (WA) and Corey Wedlock (NSW) remain on top of the section one standings, while Ellen Ryan (NSW) and Aaron Teys (NSW) now head section two.

The event will continue through the week until the top three in each section will advance to the play-offs and semi-finals on Thursday. Gold medal matches will be played Friday in mixed pairs, and women’s and men’s singles.

The Australian Commonwealth Games team had a great hitout on Sunday against a Bowls QLD contingent at Broadbeach.

This was also great experience for our local team, which featured many up and coming Queensland stars.

Our local players performed well against Australia’s best with many quality games being played.

This was the last camp for the Aussies prior to the Games. They will return on March 27 to prepare for the main event, which commences on April 5. Malaysia are back in town and will remain on the Coast until the Games.

Broadbeach Bulls have dropped from first to fifth in the Premier League after a loss away to the Enoggera Eagles.

This drops the Bulls out of the double chance (top three) come finals time. They need to win this weekend against South Tweed Sharks and rely on other results going their way to advance up the ladder.

The top five is now set with one round to play. Pine Rivers Pirates sit on top, a half-game clear of Helensvale Hawks, Kawana Thunder are in third and Hamilton Power fourth. One win separates the top five.

Other final round clashes have Helensvale away to Victoria Point Magpies and Tweed Heads Ospreys at Pine Rivers.

Hawks star Nathan Rice leads the best skip ladder and is in the box seat for the cash bonus. Kurt Brown from Kawana and I are hot on his heels.

The Premier League finals series will be held at Club Helensvale on March 17-18 as the weekend prior has been left free to allow for any washout games to be played.
