THE runaway success of last week’s Hancock Prospectin­g Australian Swimming Trials at the Optus Aquatic Centre has given us an early taste of the sporting quality and incredible excitement that will engulf our city and state in just 28 days.

To have such a major selection event staged so close to GC2018, and only a fortnight after the Australian Athletics Championsh­ips and selection trials at Carrara Stadium, has provided another great test of a prime GC2018 venue.

What happened at the Optus Aquatic Centre, with its massive spectator stands and true stadium atmosphere, was not lost on anyone.

The noise reverberat­ing around the stands lifted the athletes immeasurab­ly, their performanc­es demonstrat­ing beyond doubt the essential part spectators play in every area of sport.

For 11 magical days in April it will all happen again at packed sports stadiums from Cairns to Coolangatt­a, giving the athletes of the Commonweal­th the drive to excel and all of us memories of a lifetime.

There are still tickets available to some great sessions, including athletics at Carrara and basketball in the event cities of Cairns and Townsville.
