LetteroftheWeek
I AM disgusted by how we and our community property, Black Swan Lake (NOT a borrow pit as the council describes it), have been treated by the Gold Coast City Council.
There was no public consultation and no right of public submission when this was pushed through. They insisted the lake is toxic. Now we know that an independent report found it was not toxic, supports a considerable amount of wildlife and is in fact an effective way to control pollution from the neighbouring horse stables by preventing run off to the Nerang river.
Most councillors chose to ignore that report. Where will that effluent go now? Doesn’t this contravene Gold Coast City Council’s own waterway protection policy?
The main reasons for this destruction, that the Gold Coast Show needs the area to provide parking and that the lake is toxic, are null and void as the show is seeking a new venue and the lake is not toxic.
While council debates spending huge amounts of money on yet another cruise terminal study, the gifting of this lake, our public land, to the Gold Coast Turf Club for $1 per year is a joke.
This is the height of poor governing.
That lake with its abundant birdlife, enjoyed by so many, should be treasured, not trashed. This is community property! It should be preserved for future generations. I am outraged and want this damage undone. And I am a voter who won’t forget. MERRIDY WEBSTER, BURLEIGH HEADS
I write in response to Lilian Harrison’s letter (GCB, 10/3) in which she correctly points out I am yet to write to local residents outlining my contact details.
I have delayed doing so as I currently do not have a permanent office due to the major boundary changes of the Broadwater electorate.
While this matter should be resolved by the parliament within a couple of weeks, in the meantime Ms Harrison (and anyone living in our area) can phone on 5560 6100, email on broadwater@parliament.qld.gov.au or pop in to our temporary office at 57 Brisbane Rd Labrador.
If this option isn’t convenient, I am happy to attend anyone’s house directly to assist as I’ve done with many residents in the past couple of months.
I am honoured to have been given the chance to serve the local area and will be formally putting pen to paper as soon as the parliament
has sorted the office accomodation issues. DAVID CRISAFULLI, MEMBER FOR BROADWATER WHILST out walking on Saturday morning I had a very heavy fall at approximately 7am near the corner of Markeri St and the Gold Coast Highway at Mermaid Beach.
I was shaken up rather badly. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Surfside bus driver and a couple of his passengers who came to my aid and assisted me to my feet.
They enquired as to my wellbeing and stayed with me long enough to make sure I was okay.
They also offered to phone someone to come and get me.
I made it home by foot albeit a tad shaky. Once again I thank all involved for your unconditional support. JOHN HOSKEN
MR Hansen (Letters, GCB, 10/3), you are comparing a natural harbour to an open shore.
I would love a cruise ship terminal to be built and have asked these three questions: Do we have a construction plan? How much to build? Who will finance the project and ongoing costs?
I was told private enterprise would do this. So what is stopping them? LUIGI CARBONI
