Lift in form provides new vigour for Holman

- MARCO MONTEVERDE

BRETT Holman has no interest in staying at Brisbane Roar next season if he’s just making up the numbers.

The 33-year-old former Socceroos star is one of 16 Roar players whose contracts expire at the end of the season.

Holman has been troubled by calf injuries this season but has stood out in recent weeks in a Brisbane team making a late push for finals football for an eighth consecutive season.

The ex-Aston Villa playmaker, currently on a marquee contract, said he had started talks with Brisbane coach John Aloisi about staying at the Roar.

“I’ve had a small chat about the future in regards to next season,” Holman said.

“Nothing crazy, just see where my head’s at and also where the club’s at.

“I feel great and if that continues then I’d love to play on.”

Holman said that retirement had crossed his mind this season when he battled with ongoing calf problems.

“When it gets to that stage where you are getting older, and this (season) with a couple of injuries you look back and it’s like ‘what’s going on with the body?’ … probably (retirement) is in the back of your mind, if I’m honest,” he said.

But Holman said he had been reinvigorated by his recent form. Brisbane (eighth) play Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.
