WILL’S DEFENCE GIVES TITANS SOMETHING TO HOWL ABOUT

- TRAVIS MEYN

WILL Matthews is the Gold Coast’s silent assassin who has earned the nickname “Wolf Creek”.

Sporting a beard like a lumberjack, Matthews proved he can be an axeman for the Titans with his bonerattling defence against Canberra last Sunday.

He cut Raiders winger Jordan Rapana in half with a shot that saw Titans coach Garth Brennan award Matthews with the defensive play of the game.

Matthews, 30, has found a new lease on life in his second stint at the Coast after an injury-plagued 2017 which saw him play just one NRL game at the Dragons.

But he didn’t have much of an explanation for his new nickname, which stems from the 2005 Aussie cult film based loosely on serial killer Ivan Milat.

“Maybe (I’m) a bit scary, maybe the beard, I don’t know,” Matthews said.

“(It’s) only started just recently because I’m pretty quiet. Me and Jai (Arrow) get called the serial killers because we don’t tend to say too much. We just go about our business.” Arrow, also a newbie at the Titans, said Matthews could be the enforcer the Gold Coast needed in their forward pack.

“He is really quiet and doesn’t say much,” Arrow said. “As it happened on Sunday, he folded a few blokes in half.

“He’s a bit sneaky old Wilbur. He reminds me of Wolf Creek with that beard.”
