Shorts showcase at Surfers

-

THE work of three local filmmakers will be showcased on the big screen in Surfers Paradise at the 2018 Shorts in Paradise Film Festival (SIPFest).

The 10-minute masterpieces – Declan Caruso’s Skin Like Bark, Alisha Marfatia’s Surren and Colin Usher’s documentary short Su Brown and The Wallace Rockhole Pottery – have been selected as finalists for this year’s showcase and screening on April 22 after making it to the finals of the Gold Coast Film Festival-backed event.

Mermaid Beach filmmaking all-rounder Usher has forged a name for short unscripted docos about people he finds interesting or who’s community work goes unnoticed.

His SIPFest entry tells the story of Currumbin Valley potter Su Brown’s eight-year labour of love teaching residents in the small, Uruna Aboriginal community of Wallace Rockhole, in Central Australia.

This year’s SIPFest prize pool includes $3000 for best film, $1000 for the runner-up, a $1000 people’s choice award, $1000 for best screenplay, $500 for best actor and best actress, $500 for the best film by a Gold Coast resident and $500 for the best film showcasing Surfers Paradise.
