AN ambulance crew were left shaken but unhurt after a rock was hurled into their windscreen off an M1 overpass yesterday.

The two paramedics were travelling to an emergency call-out along the M1 southbound near the Smith St exit just after midday when a large rock was thrown by a child from the overpass.

Queensland Ambulance spokesman Michael Augustus described the action as “absolutely disgusting behaviour”.

“Whoever this person is they need to think about their behaviour,” he said.

“The officers could not only have been killed but if the car swerved into others on the road, their lives could have been taken also.”

Mr Augustus said the officers reported they saw a boy leaning over the overpass moments before the rock struck the windscreen.

The damaged vehicle was taken off the road immediately with another unit dispatched MICHAEL AUGUSTUS

to respond to the emergency call-out.

Mr Augustus said the child could have had a manslaughter charge on his hands after such a senseless” act.

“Besides the obvious consequences this idiotic act could have caused, there may well have been a delay in getting to what could have been a lifethreatening case,” he said in a QAS Facebook post.

“There have been cases where the car has swerved off the road resulting in death,” he wrote.

Paul Rollans commented on the post saying there had been a similar case in Campbelltown “moronic and in Sydney not long ago.

“A child threw a rock from a bridge shattering the windscreen of a truck passing underneath,” Mr Rollans said.

“... the driver mounted the embarkement, rolling his truck and ending his life.”

Gold Coasters commenting on the QAS post hoped the boy would face serious consequences if identified.

Mr Augustus is urging anyone with information to contact QAS or Police.
