Decision to volunteer opens up a world of opportunity

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

FOR Skye Bond, being part of the Commonwealth Games was the chance to do something different, but she never thought it would give her opportunities around the world.

The former lifesaver started talking to swimming officials as she volunteered throughout the Games, and will now be heading overseas to teach what she knows best.

“I’m going to be presenting in Singapore, I’m looking at an exchange program for my Nippers in Ghana, and now we’re looking at going to Uganda as well,” said Ms Bond, who works with a swim school.

“I was just hoping to make some Facebook friends!”

Ms Bond is one of 25 winners of our competition for Games Shapers, run by the Bulletin in conjunction with the Gold Coast Suns and Village Roadshow Theme Parks, with a special prize of two nights stay at Sea World Resort and a special thank you to volunteers at the Suns’ first home game at Metricon Stadium in June.

Village Roadshow Theme Parks CEO Clark Kirby said his company was delighted to have an opportunity to celebrate the volunteers.

“This feature and the Sea World Resort prizing for the 25 featured participants is a fantastic way for us to say a sincere thank you for all of their hard work and really show our appreciation for their time,” Mr Kirby said.

When she learnt she was one of the winners, Ms Bond said she had been certain the Games would be the chance of a lifetime and she couldn’t have been more excited.

“You very rarely get that pat on the back. I worked in lifesaving and I’ve pulled a lot of bodies out of the water,” she said.

“You don’t do it for the pat on the back, but when you do get it, it’s like, ‘wow, that’s cool’!”
