Time to school Surfers
Alleygators coach says Colleges can end champs’ winning streak
PALM Beach Currumbin believe their Round 5 conquerors Colleges are about to put an end to Surfers Paradise’s stranglehold over the Gold Coast District Rugby Union first grade competition.
From what his side have come up against in the past two rounds, Alleygators coach Anthony Dwyer feels the Knights are well-placed to win next weekend’s top of the table clash.
PBC lost 67-0 against Surfers last weekend and endured another tough game on Saturday, losing 69-0 to Colleges.
When asked who he predicted would emerge victorious between the two leaders in Round 6, Dwyer had no hesitation in putting forward Colleges.
“I think Colleges are a better side,” he said.
“That’s based on this simple judgment – we played much better against Colleges but we lost by the same. It will be a good game.”
Despite losing heavily for the second straight round, Dwyer took heart from the promising signs he saw against the Knights.
“I’m really, really pleased with our development and progress,” he said.
“It has been a difficult start to the season with a fractured competition draw to start with, changes of coaching staff at the club and we’re not overflowing with numbers but the team is building really well.”
Knights coach Graham Herlihy declared his side was “much better” than it was last year – when they again finished runners-up – as they strive to finally knock off the Dolphins.
“We have recruited some experience in key positions and the team seems to be gelling a lot better at this time of the year,” he said.
Surfers defied the red carding of second-rower Aaron Enoka to defeat Coolangatta Tweed 32-6 to extend their winning streak to 42 games.
At Pizzey Park, Gold Coast Eagles beat Bond Pirates 41-0, though the latter fought hard to concede only five points after halftime.
