Suns buck history to beat Swans

- TOM BOSWELL

THE Gold Coast Suns’ poor history against the Sydney Swans has formed the inspiration behind their historic win at NEAFL level.

Suns NEAFL coach Nick Malceski put Gold Coast’s record of 13 straight losses over five years, with an average losing margin of 64, at the forefront of the players’ minds moments before they went on to record a 8.10 (58) to 6.13 (49) win over Sydney at FankhausAaron er Reseve in Southport on Saturday.

“We did touch on that pregame,” Malceski said. “We haven’t had a good run against them at all. I let the boys know and they were revved up.

“It’s always good to beat a team that we’re trying to play like a bit in terms of contested footy and tackle pressure.

“They were the benchmark last year in the NEAFL for both of those stats and that’s something we are trying to pride ourselves on each game.’

Hall was among the best with two goals and 33 pos- sessions while forward Callum Ah Chee spent more than half of the game playing in the midfield as he builds his fitness up following a 10-week stint on the sideline with hand and hamstring injuries.

Gold Coast have won three of their opening four games and will travel to the nation’s capital this week to play Canberra on Saturday.

Southport lost their first NEAFL game of the season on Saturday, falling to Sydney Uni 13.10 (88) to 6.19 (55).
