Scoreline a highlight in 2-0 contest

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

CURRUMBIN have taken the honours against Tweed Heads in a 2-0 scrap.

You read that right – 2-0... after 80 minutes of rugby league.

The Eagles won the tense contest on a wet Saturday afternoon at Galleon Way, with a Phil Ramage penalty goal the only factor splitting the rivals.

“People were saying the 60s,” Currumbin coach Ryan Gundry laughed when asked the last time he saw a similar scoreline in a game of local league.

“It was a pretty dour game. It was wet and it was just a battle of attrition.”

The sides returned to the sheds at halftime with the scorers yet to be troubled, making light work of Gundry’s reset message.

“You always say you have got to look at the scoreboard as if it is nil-all at halftime but when I said that to them I laughed because it actually was nil-all,” he said.

“It was pretty hard to be serious about it. Both sides came in with a game plan to try to play each other through the middle third of the park.”

Ramage put the Eagles ahead with a two-pointer 25 minutes from the finish and from there the hosts had to dig deep to hold onto their slender lead.

“They are showing a good resolve in defence,” Gundry said. “It’s something that we worked really hard on in the pre-season and then obviously last week down at Bilambil with the early start we probably didn’t turn up to play.

“I was really happy with how they kept turning up for each other (against Tweed).”

Runaway Bay accounted for Bilambil 28-6, while Tugun were 20-6 winners against Southport.

“It was a good close game … we just couldn’t hold the ball and couldn’t finish off tries,” said Tigers captain Tu Whakatihi, who was playing against his 2017 team.
