Whitelaw: Tweed can be better

-

TWEED Heads have made it three straight Intrust Super Cup wins but skipper Cheyne Whitelaw said his side were not entirely satisfied with their trouncing of Mackay.

The Seagulls steamrolled the home side in the first half with five tries to set up a 52-24 victory at BB Print Stadium on Saturday.

Yet, Whitelaw was unhappy to see the team concede three tries in the final 11 minutes to give the Cutters some respectability to the scoreline.

“A lot of our combinations are starting to come together which is awesome to see,” the 23-year-old said.

“But in saying that as well, we were disappointed in our defence. Credit to Mackay, they just kept coming at us and we leaked a few points.”

Brayden McGrady posted his second hat-trick of the season and his cousin Lindon McGrady kicked eight goals, while AJ Brimson scored a double in a man of the match effort.

Dropped five-eighth Kane Elgey put in a polished display in his first game since being dropped by the Titans.

“Kane’s experience was just unbelievable,” Whitelaw said.

“Having him come back and help us, also we can help him get back to where he wants to be in first grade, which I have no doubt if he keeps performing the way he did (on Saturday) that he will.”

Despite accumulating some excellent statistics of late, Whitelaw declared his own form is “still a long way from where I want to be.”

Tweed have a bye next weekend before hosting Ipswich in Round 10.
