OUR NEW TRY KING

- – CONNOR O’BRIEN

TWEED STAR’S HOT STREAK:

SIMPLY gathering experience is no longer good enough for rising Titans prop Max King.

King, who celebrates his 21st birthday today, has enjoyed a quality start to the season to cement his place in Garth Brennan’s top 17.

King said he had taken confidence from being Brennan’s go-to man to inject energy off the bench, averaging 42 minutes across his seven games.

He has made those minutes count too, chalking up almost 25 tackles a game – at an excellent tackle efficiency rate of 96.5 per cent – plus 91 running metres on average.

That tackle efficiency puts him second among Titans players this season, just behind Jack Stockwell (97.6 per cent) and just ahead of Jarrod Wallace (96.0 per cent).

King put his numbers down to a bigger physique, though at 104kg he is only slightly heavier than previously, and additional specific work in the pre-season.

“It has definitely been helping and there was a big emphasis in the pre-season on tackling technique and wrestling,” he said.

“Hopefully it can keep improving as my career folds out.

“I am sort of past that phase now of just getting experience and I really want to be making my mark in the competition now.”

King is set to come off the bench against the Raiders in Canberra tomorrow afternoon.
