PLUCK AT THE RACES
SOMETIMES to get ahead, you have to take matters into your own hands.
That’s just what Gold Coast make-up artist Angel Gower did to win the millinery category of the Gold Coast Cup Fashions on the Field on Saturday.
Inspired by her fellow fashionable fillies, Mrs Gower designed and crafted her winning piece herself, a concoction of feathers, jewels and beaded embellishments.
“I make them myself from watching videos on YouTube,” she said.
“This piece was originally a necklace and I just added a few things and make it into what it is now.
“I love feathers and I love beads – bling bling.
“When I saw the beautiful fashion at the races, that’s when I thought I wanted to do something beautiful and unique.
“To make this myself and win I’m so happy. I can’t wait to do another one – I want to go in everything now.”
But her creatives juices weren’t dried up after that, she also created a piece for her daughter, Sahara, who is fast following in her mum’s footsteps.
“My daughter is a model, she just started her modelling career, so I thought I would make one for her to give her some exposure and get her in front of the camera,” Mrs Gower said.
“She loves doing things like this, we both had such a good time.”
Mrs Gower and Sahara were two of more than 5000 punters at the races.
Other fashion categories included; the lovebirds – best paired outfits, the golden peacock – best dressed male and golden canary – best female outfit.
Pair Glenda and Ross Newick were the lovebirds category winners, with Glenda’s gold frock matching the gold hue of Ross’ champagne blazer.
The golden peacock went to Michael Dunn, who impressed judges with his dark subtle feather print suit.
Suzzanne Suzette won the revolutionary attire, with a leather skirt, leather gloves and delicately embroidered jacket.
The golden canary winner was Milano Imai, who wore a navy blue statement cut-out lace dress with long bell sleeves, a gold belt and gold flower fascinator.
