Ramsey on mission to do Everest

- TOM BOSWELL

CHAMPAGNE Cuddles’ partowner Stuart Ramsey hopes to take the Gold Coast Guineas winner to the $13 million The Everest this year.

Ramsey voiced his desire to see the horse run in the world’s richest race in October just moments after jockey Corey Brown rode Champagne Cuddles to victory in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) run at Aquis Park on Saturday.

The Bjorn Baker-trained filly gave her credentials an almighty boost when she ran a track record of 1:07.65.

Ramsey said his ambitions were to have Champagne Cuddles get a slot in The Everest, where a rematch against Trapeze Artist, who beat the filly in the Group 1 Golden Rose last year, would likely await.

“She will have another run and then go to the (Group 1) Stradbroke (Handicap), then (Group 1) Tattersall’s Tiara and hopefully in the spring go on to The Everest.

“We haven’t seen the best of her yet. I have had the whole family for 30 years. She is a wonderful filly.”

Ramsey, a respected NSW breeder who has been involved in horse ownership for more than 40 years, said the threeyear-old filly was the best horse he had owned.

Multiple Group winner El Cambio held the Gold Coast 1200m record for 10 years.

It was a record that Steve Hawkins, who called the race a decade ago, thought would never be beaten.
