Tomic scrapes out win
GOLD Coast tennis star Bernard Tomic has notched his first pro tour singles win since January, saving a match point to defeat a French teenager ranked 315 in the world.
Tomic, whose ranking has plummeted from a one-time high of 17 to 243, scraped past Geoffrey Blancaneaux 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 at a low-level Challenger event in Provence, France.
It took 25-year-old Tomic two hours and 13 minutes of toil on clay – his least-favoured surface – for his first win on tour since Australian Open qualifying at the start of the year.
Tomic, who came back from 2-5 down in the final set to win 7-5, earned $3475 and a second-round appearance at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger event.
He returns to court tonight against Frenchman Johan Tatlot, who is ranked 363.
Fellow Queenslander John Millman beat countryman Alexei Popyrin 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
