Braced for big battle at No.1

VETERAN fullback Michael Gordon does not feel his spot is safe after Garth Brennan’s recent high-profile axings of Konrad Hurrell and Kane Elgey.

Gordon’s form has been steady if not spectacular during the opening nine rounds after joining the Titans from Sydney in the off-season.

Brennan has shown his intent to continue shaking things up until he can discover a winning formula, given the team have lost four on the trot.

“I don’t feel like anyone ever feels like they are safe,” Gordon said.

“I have never felt like I am safe or comfortable and that’s why I always am like, ‘it is my spot and you are going to have to come and take it’.

“It’s always hard when you are losing, you start questioning everything but I think the best thing is to look at yourself and look at your own preparation and if you are doing all of the little things right, the hard work does translate onto the field.”

Gordon has been tested under the high ball in recent weeks and says it is an area he prides himself on.

“I practice after every session,” said the 34-year-old.

“There was one on the weekend where I didn’t even get a hand to it because I was knocked out of the way clean,

so it was just one of those things, you can’t do much about it.

“I dropped one or two the week before. I never like dropping the ball – that’s my job at the back to catch bombs and I take great pride in being safe and reliable.

“It’s something I always work on.”

Gordon goes head-tohead with champion No.1 Billy Slater tomorrow when the Titans face Melbourne at Suncorp Stadium.

Gold Coast head into the Round 10 clash as major underdogs.

“We have been training really well lately and we just haven’t been transferring it to games which has been the really frustrating part, especially the last three or four weeks,” Gordon said.

“If we go out and play the way we have been training, I wouldn’t be surprised at all (if we win).”
