FAMILY DEFENDS ‘LOVING FATHER’

- JESS ELDER jessica.elder@news.com.au

TRAVIS Barry wants to set the record straight.

For almost four years he has listened to people judge his late big brother Kane, who died after a street fight outside his Southport unit.

Mr Barry said he felt his family had been “failed” by the justice system.

“Kane has been portrayed as an aggressive person with tattoos ... I can assure you now that Kane wasn’t that type of person, as you can tell by the amount of family support,” he said.

“His tattoos didn’t change the person he was.

“He was an amazing dad, a loving son and brother ... he is deeply missed and didn’t deserve to die the way that he did.”

Nathan Sanchez, the man charged with his death yesterday walked free, acquitted of murder and manslaughter.

Mr Barry said his family was shattered.

“Mum is distraught ... we all are,” he said.

KANE WAS A GENUINE GUY, HE LOVED HIS FAMILY AND HE WAS A GREAT DAD. TRAVIS BARRY

“Kane was a genuine guy, he loved his family and he was a great dad to his daughter, who will now grow up without a father.”

Kane’s father, Darryl Hughan, posted on social media, thanking everyone for their support.

“Kane lost his battle for life, and we lost our battle in court,” he posted.

“We are the ones with a life sentence.”

Kane was father to nineyear-old Ellie-May.

Her mum, Danielle Roberts, said Ellie-May often asked about what happened on that night in 2014.

“She’s still young now, but when she is older she will understand more and it will affect her in different ways,” she said. “We will make sure she always remembers him.”
