Mayors face suspension
MOVES were under way last night to ensure tough now council disciplinary laws were given assent by the Governor to allow for the suspension of four mayors and a councillor.
The five – Logan Mayor Luke Smith, Ipswich Mayor Andrew Antoniolli, Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire Council Edric Walden, Hope Vale Mayor Greg McLean and Logan councillor Stacey McIntosh – are all facing charges that, if found guilty, would disqualify them from holding office under the new laws.
Their suspensions are due to take effect as soon as the new laws – passed by State Parliament – are assented to by Governor Paul de Jersey.
The Government jumped the gun yesterday, prematurely announcing assent had been granted. Moves were under way to allow for assent to be granted last night to ensure the suspensions did come into effect yesterday as announced.
