HAROLD COMES TO VISIT KIDS

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

THE students of Ormeau Woods State High received a special visitor to their veggie garden last week, as Healthy Harold stopped by.

In Life Education Queensland’s visit to the school, Harold stepped in to help special education students plant his favourite food — carrots.

The visit was part of a larger unit on health and nutrition, something that is already a big part of the school.

The garden has been running for almost six years, growing a range of fruits, vegetables and herbs, all as a way to get students involved in learning.

Getting involved isn’t limited to giraffes, either – on any given day there can be as many as 12 students helping out with planting, weeding and keeping things tidy.

Children can see the growing process and then enjoy their creations in the school’s cooking and science programs, according to their teacher, Sarah Lopes.

“They enjoy watching it grow, they enjoy the whole process,” Ms Lopes said.

“They’re taking it home to their parents, and we do have parents show a lot of interest. They’ll come see it in the afternoons, and students take the recipes home.”
