OFF THE RECORD

-

YOU can imagine his excitement at being shortlisted for a very high-profile position. Lengthy resume and stellar personal references were included in his submission. At the interview, however, he noticed a complete lack of interest in any of his many achievements. Only later, after he happened to meet some of the other failed candidates, did the penny drop – the interview process was a sham. He and the others were just there to make up the numbers because the position had already been decided by a cabal of faceless folk.

WHAT goes up doesn’t always come down. The promise was that after the Commonwealth Games had finished, the exorbitant hike in fees for this joint would come tumbling back down to their previous level. Obviously the owner has come to enjoy the boost in revenue but he may find that a shortterm gain will lead to long-term pain as customers vote to leave and never return.

HOW lucky was this fashionista? Dressed to impress she arrived at the soiree and was horrified to find that her diamond bracelet had fallen off somewhere along the way. Much shrieking as madam realised her precious sparkler was gone forever. But wait, the light from yonder car has revealed a faint twinkle on the footpath. Praise be to all that is good and great because the topshelf bauble was found and peace was restored.

GREED is not all it is cracked up to be as this ducker and diver has discovered. He happily entered the brotherhood of the bent and crooked some time ago but somehow managed to keep himself out of too much trouble. However, he picked the wrong mark in this instance because the aggrieved party has decided to extract fearsome retribution for what was a minor stitch up. It may only have been a few dollars but it is going to cost this dude big time.

ANY race over a long distance requires planning to pick the best route. In this case the man charged with getting his team across the finish line seems to have mixed up his compass points. When the starter’s gun for the 100 or so competitors sounded he took a novel approach. While they all went one way he took off at a rate of knots in the opposite direction citing a short cut. Lo and behold he got lost and had to be shown the correct path while his teammates plotted a mutiny that at least would enable them to get home safe and sound.
