Griese gets his revenge

FORMER Tugun coach Martin Griese has exacted the perfect revenge, masterminding Currumbin’s victory over his old club at the weekend.

Ousted as Seahawks mentor in the off-season, Griese found a new home up the road at the Eagles where he has taken on the role as assistant coach to Ryan Gundry.

The latter credited Griese, his former long-time Burleigh Queensland Cup teammate, as the brains behind their 20-18 win at Boyd St on Saturday.

“Martin Griese, his knowledge and insight of Tugun for me was fantastic this week,” Gundry said.

“He was very excited – as excited as Martin gets.”

Among the Eagles’ playing ranks were more ex-Seahawks including Daniel Webb and Reece Worboys.

Currumbin are now unbeaten after six rounds but they did it the hard way.

After leading 18-6 at the break, Gundry’s side spent much of the second half with just 11 players on the field as Liam Donnelly and Josh Campbell were separately sinbinned and captain Ken Allison was sent off.

“It wasn’t for anything malicious or anything like that, it was just for team penalties,”

Gundry said. “The problem is it takes away from the spectacle of the game because it was a good contest. “I think there were 24 penalties all up, so that’s a lot.

“My boys were really courageous … when things didn’t go our way in the second half, no one laid down. They all put their hand up and worked really hard for each other.

“It’s definitely something that I need to address, the lack of discipline, and the boys know that.”

It was Currumbin’s third win this year by a margin of four points or less, with the side’s abundance of experience proving useful.

Jai Veli scored a hat-trick for Tugun.

Southport stunned Runaway Bay 34-12, allowing Tweed Heads to leapfrog their fellow Seagulls into second place after defeating Ormeau 62-12 yesterday.

Defending premiers Burleigh bounced back from three losses on the trot with a 40-10 win over Bilambil at Pizzey Park as centre recruit Justin Tavae scored two tries.
