Bolivia rules at states

- with Brett Wilkie

BOLIVIA Millerick from Broadbeach has taken out the Queensland State Women’s Singles Title on the Sunshine Coast at the weekend, defeating Jessie Cottell from Helensvale 25-14 in the final.

Millerick beat Judy Whaites (Sunshine Coast) in the semi while Cottell defeated Jessica Srisamruaybai from Tweed Heads to advance to the final.

This completes a rare set for Millerick, who has all state women’s titles to her name.

After previously winning the pairs, triples and fours disciplines in past years, the singles was one that has always eluded her.

“I feel proud, excited, happy and stoked. To complete the set of state titles, is absolutely amazing,” she said.

“I couldn’t have done it with a better team and I thank them so much for being beside me in all the titles.

“In the end it hasn’t sunk in yet, but I still feel so thrilled.”

In the men’s singles, Jay Dawe of the Sunshine Coast defeated Jacob Nelson from Brisbane in the final, which was a high-quality affair which went down to the wire.

Chloe Stewart completed a treble of titles during the championships when she took out the women’s pairs with Tweed mate Srisamruaybai.

They defeated Cottell and Julie Keegan (Broadbeach) in the final after overcoming Helensvale’s defending champions Natasha Jones and Lynsey Clarke in the semi.

Former Gold Coasters Jade Groenewege and Sean Baker took out the men’s pairs after defeating Aron Sherriff and me in a thrilling last-bowl final.

We defeated John Bain and Scott DeJongh-Fitzpatrick from Tweed Heads in the semi while Baker downed Brisbane’s Steven Tong and Alex Murtagh.

Winners from the men’s and women’s open singles, pairs, triples and fours titles will now advance to the Australian Championships in Merimbula, NSW in November.

Geoff Jensen defended his over-60 men’s pairs title with Barry Ward. Merril Ahern and Linda Morish won the women’s over-60 pairs.

Queensland qualifying for the Australian Indoor Men’s Singles will be at Paradise Point and Tweed Heads this weekend.

Successful qualifiers will advance to the main event at Tweed Heads in August.

Ryan Bester has compiled a high-quality field of 64 players to contest the inaugural Blue Opal Singles at Broadbeach on June 5-6.

Players must pay a $1000 entry fee to enter with $64,000 prize money on offer.

Bowls Queensland are currently seeking expressions of interest for positions on their following committees: Coaching, Match, Umpire and Selection.
