HELENSVALE’S YOUNG INVINCIBLES HOG LIMELIGHT

- ALEXANDRA BERNARD

HELENSVALE’S under-9s are rapidly building a reputation as Gold Coast rugby’s invincibles.

The young Hogs team have never lost a game since beginning in the under-6s.

While the Gold Coast District Rugby Union competition doesn’t track scores in early junior age groups, the Hogs have been keeping their own unofficial scores all along and haven’t lost in over 100 games.

Phil Broadhurst has been coaching the boys since the start and said listening is the key to their success.

“They’re easy kids, they try their best and it seems to work for them,” he said.

A 30-15 victory against Coolangatta Tweed earlier this month was the team’s closest ever scoreline, with regular winning margins of more than 50 points.

Recently they defeated Gold Coast Eagles 50-15.

Broadhurst doesn’t underestimate their talent.

“Other teams on the Coast only have one or two, but we have five or six exceptional players, and everyone else is really good,” he said. The boys are all good mates, with most having known each other since they were five-years- old and play several other sports together.

Broadhurst said they are determined to maintain their record but acknowledge the streak will eventually come to an end.

“It’ll happen. Enjoy it while it lasts,” said Broadhurst.
