THE federal Department of Education and Training spent $24.1 million on a new IT system that was scrapped before it was finished.

Department Secretary Michele Bruniges said she expected “not much” can be salvaged from the project. At least two senior officials have left the department over the bungle but Dr Bruniges told a Senate hearing yesterday she remained behind to “take full responsibility”.

“I have apologised publicly about the role in which the department’s poor contract management played,” she said.
