The event at Southport Sharks for Friends With Dignity, a support group focusing on bringing an end to domestic violence, included guest speaker Rose Batty
The Friends with Dignity High Tea at Southport Sharks was something very, very special. More than 600 attended and the spirit in the room was a testament to the inherent goodness that exists in our city. The topic – domestic violence – is difficult to hear while some of the statistics and case histories are truly shocking. The good news is that so many people across many organisations like Friends with Dignity are working very hard to bring about change. A truly inspiring afternoon.

LISTENING to Rosie Batty (pictured, right, with Geena Beckworth) giving her speech as the special guest at the Friends with Dignity event and you can but marvel at her resilience. The 2015 Australian of the Year came to national prominence via the cruellest of circumstances due to the murder of her son Luke by his father. Since Luke’s death she has become a fearless campaigner against domestic violence, championing the cause of everyone caught in that fearful vice. She gives hundreds of speeches and interviews every year but her key message to everyone in that room is that it is going to take many years before we see real change.
