Stosur to face Muguruza
DARE to dream. Gold Coast star Sam Stosur has set up a blockbuster French Open third round against third seed Garbine Muguruza.
Stosur, a former finalist who thrives on the clay, downed her doubles partner and dangerous power-hitting Russian Anna Pavluchenkova 6-2 7-6 in their second round last night.
Stosur, 34, raced through the first set 6-2 against the 30th seed in 30 minutes. She was broken in her opening service game but broke straight back to level 1-1.
Stosur again immediately dropped serve to start the second set and was trailing until she broke back for 5-5. She won the tiebreaker 7-1 to make her 10th consecutive French Open third round.
Stosur and Muguruza, the 2016 French Open champion, face off tomorrow night.
Stosur, who has looked sharp in her first two rounds, was on a roll and in peak form at last year’s French Open when she was undone in the last 16 by a hand injury.
