Green Lions keep unbeaten season on track

- TOM BOSWELL

THE most inexperienced Palm Beach Currumbin team in three years has scored a 41point win over Morningside.

Morningside became the latest to fall to the reigning premiers on Saturday, with the Lions running out 14.15 (99) to 8.10 (58) winners at Salk Oval.

Palm Beach Currumbin kept Morningside scoreless in the opening term while piling on 29 points of their own to produce a margin their Brisbane rivals couldn’t overcome.

The Lions hold top spot on the ladder after starting their season with six wins, while fellow Gold Coast clubs Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise and Labrador all had byes.

Hunter Hall and Dean Katsiris made their debuts for an injury-hit Lions team, while Lachlan Torpy and Tristian Evert have played five senior games between them.

Coach Chad Owens praised his side, who are on track to mirror Labrador’s 2017 feat of going through the whole regular season undefeated.

“It was a really good win,” Owens said.

“It was good to give the kids a chance to play and they did well. Our midfield were able to get on top and we have a lot of blokes who can run through there at the moment.”

Jason Burge and James Holland kicked three goals each while Jesse Derrick and Tyler Cornish both kicked two. Owens labelled defender Adam McKenzie best on ground.

“He reads the ball well and sets up our defence,” Owens said. “There is nothing fancy about him but he does the little things really well.”

Palm Beach Currumbin will play Surfers Paradise this Saturday, while Broadbeach and Labrador will both return to play Wilston Grange and Sandgate respectively.
