MAYOR WON’T SIGN OFF ON HOLLYWOOD IDEA

MAYOR Tom Tate has dismissed a Gold Coast model’s idea to install a Hollywood-style sign on the Gold Coast.

After public ridicule of the $2.1 million Gold Coast lights on the Yatala/Stapylton stretch of the M1, face of the Gold Coast Airport and former Miss Universe Australia finalist Portia Large is pushing for signage that properly represents who we are as a city.

But while Cr Tate said the northern lights needed improvement, we shouldn’t imitate Hollywood.

“The Hollywood sign is iconic and we would look stupid trying to replicate it,” he said.

“Our GC lights at the southern end near the airport are proving popular.

“Similarly, the Surfers Paradise sign is one of the most photographed locations in Australia, providing our city with millions in free-toair social media PR annually.

“We need to sort the northern gateways sign so I look forward to that report coming back soon.’’

Cr Tate previously said he would have preferred a Las Vegas-style welcome sign.

Ms Large said Hollywood and the Gold Coast have a lot in common.

“The Hollywood sign is one of the most iconic symbols of American culture,” she said.

“The sign’s message is aspirational: This is a place where magic is possible, where dreams can come true.

“The Gold Coast is one of those places too.”

The locations Ms Large suggested include Magic Mountain Hill, Miami Headland, Burleigh Headland, Wallace Nicol Park (Currumbin Ally) or the Southport Broadwater Parklands, but she said it should be up to the public to decide.
