MENINGA URGES QUEENSLANDERS TO BACK BAG BAN

-

QUEENSLAND Rugby League great Mal Meninga has thrown his weight behind the State Government’s plastic bag ban.

The ban, which comes into force on July 1, will see plastic bags disappear from all retail outlets, with shoppers encouraged to bring their own bags, as part of a push to reduce plastic waste.

The former champion NRL player and Maroons State of Origin-winning coach said reducing plastic pollution should be a priority for all Queenslanders. “We cannot afford to stand by and let the damage caused by plastic shopping bags continue to happen,” he said.

“I’m calling on everyone to pick up the ball and play their role in making Queensland’s plastic bag ban a success.”

Under the changes no retailer will be able to provide single-use plastic bags, under penalty of a $6000 fine.
