Residents opposing high five

- KIRSTIN PAYNE

HOPE ISLAND residents are gearing up for a battle against five multi-storey developments planned for a single island boulevard.

Two separate proposals to build a total of five residential towers on Grant Ave have been met with tough opposition from the neighbourhood association.

Both developments have been put forward by former Emandar Group partner, developer George Matrocostas under HI Property Holdings 1 Pty LTD.

The 1 Grant Ave site proposes a total of 266 units in two separate towers, spanning over eight to 10 storeys.

The combined 31-35 Grant Ave site proposal includes three separate six to 10 storey complexes, with a total of 367 units.

The site was purchased for a combined price of $7,350,000 in March by HI Property Holdings 1.

The plans for both developments include a pool, residential lounges and underground parking facilities.

Public consultation on the 31-35 Grant Ave site closes later this month and has already received five submissions which have raised concerns about the capacity of the roads, the height changes and parking.

Under the Gold Coast City Plan, the height limits for the area sit at a maximum of 32 metres, which are likely to be eclipsed by the proposed 10storey builds.

While the developer’s submission argues the height restrictions on the island are “significantly outdated”, resident Marcel Van Hooft said that was simply not the case.

Mr Van Hooft said the lack of public transport and street space needed to be considered before any mass development on the avenue.

“The City Plan was put in place only a few years ago, with the support of hundreds of submissions, we do not want to see that overwritten,” Mr Van Hooft said.
