‘Three in cop chase’

- LEA EMERY lea.emery@news.com.au

POLICE are searching for two men seen running from a stolen car during an hour-long chase across the Gold Coast on Tuesday night.

The man accused of driving the car, Kane Dean (pictured), allegedly stopped briefly at Pacific Pines to let the men out.

The 33-year-old allegedly led police on a pursuit across the city that involved a police helicopter, road spikes and three attempts to stop the car.

Dean briefly faced Southport Magistrates Court yesterday over the chase.

Defence lawyer Lisa Searing, of Buckland Allen Criminal Lawyers, did not apply for bail on Dean’s behalf.

He is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and driving while on a disqualified licence.

A traffic camera spotted the Ford Laser on the M1 about 7.50pm driving at speed.

The car was tracked by police helicopter from Entertainment Drive, Oxenford, and drove the wrong way down various streets and on a footpath. Police allege Dean dropped off two unknown passengers at Pacific Pines.

The car was tracked to Broadbeach and was seen on Hooker Blvd driving 100-110km/h along the 70km/h road

Police tracked the car using the PolAir helicopter along Gilston Rd at Nerang, on Nielsens Rd at Carrara, down Gooding Dr at Merrimac and in Bundall Rd, Southport.

Police tried to stop the car with spikes but were unsuccessful.

Dean is alleged to have driven the car on the wrong side of the road as he travelled down Government Rd, Labrador, and was driving in excess of 100km/ h and through red lights.

It was then that police began to follow the car on the ground as well as in the air.

Police again used the road spikes in Government Rd and punctured the car’s front and rear driver-side tyres. Spikes were used for a third time in Brisbane Rd, Arundel, where the wheels began to fall off.

Police allege Dean drove the car on its four rims before it came to a stop.

It is alleged Dean exited the car and ran into nearby bushland. A police dog tracked Dean and bit him in the groin before police arrested him.

He was treated at Gold Coast University Hospital before being returned to police custody.

Dean will not be required to be produced from prison for the next court date on July 10.
