Duo to lead Seagulls

CHEYNE Whitelaw has backed Lamar Liolevave and Sam Meskell to lead Tweed Heads’ charge as Intrust Super Cup co-captains after scans confirmed his season is over with an ACL rupture.

Though a typo on the QRL website initially listed Eli Levido as skipper for their Round 15 home match against Norths on Saturday, it will be vicecaptains Liolevave and Meskell who step up to the top job.

Whitelaw is confident his side can continue their momentum – having won six of their past seven games – under their new leaders, both of whom have previously captained the squad.

“Meskell has the experience … he’s been at the club for a long time,” Whitelaw said.

“He has a very level head on his shoulders. Having that experience I think the boys can look up to him and he is very calm in games, he doesn’t let emotion get to him too much and he’s very well-spoken being a schoolteacher.

“And Lamar, he’s a man of few words but when he talks, everyone listens.

“He just goes out each week and puts on some big shots and just leads by example which I think the boys really respond to.”

The 23-year-old’s injury comes just three weeks after form centre Brayden McGrady suffered the same fate.
