Alleged kidnapper given a beating from inmates

Zhang showed no sign of his injuries when he appeared in Southport Magistrate­s Court yesterday where he was granted bail.

Zhang has not entered a plea for kidnapping, torture, deprivatio­n of liberty and assault occasionin­g bodily harm.

Magistrate Brian Kucks granted Zhang bail on the condition he pay a $30,000 surety, surrender his passport and not contact his father, Zhen Jie Zhang, 53, also known as Kenny Zhang.

Defence lawyer Danielle Heable, of Dib and Associates, said Zhang would defend the charges. “He is very relieved to be on bail,” she said.

The Zhangs are accused of taking the boy from outside his home after school on May 11.

The elder Zhang was found with the boy 24 hours later in Grafton.
