Al­leged kid­nap­per given a beat­ing from in­mates

Zhang showed no sign of his in­juries when he ap­peared in South­port Mag­is­trates Court yes­ter­day where he was granted bail.

Zhang has not en­tered a plea for kid­nap­ping, tor­ture, de­pri­va­tion of lib­erty and as­sault oc­ca­sion­ing bod­ily harm.

Mag­is­trate Brian Kucks granted Zhang bail on the con­di­tion he pay a $30,000 surety, sur­ren­der his pass­port and not con­tact his fa­ther, Zhen Jie Zhang, 53, also known as Kenny Zhang.

De­fence lawyer Danielle He­able, of Dib and As­so­ciates, said Zhang would de­fend the charges. “He is very re­lieved to be on bail,” she said.

The Zhangs are ac­cused of tak­ing the boy from out­side his home af­ter school on May 11.

The el­der Zhang was found with the boy 24 hours later in Grafton.
