Prison for gun runner

Playboy lifestyle funded by sale of bombs, drugs

- VANDA CARSON

A PLAYBOY gun runner and drug kingpin told police about a massive arsenal of bombs and explosives held in a secret stockpile, a court has heard.

Matthew Delander, 35, from Paradise Point, was in the Supreme Court in Brisbane yesterday where he pleaded guilty to 30 drugs and weapons charges, including trafficking in ice and ecstasy over eight months in 2015 and 2016 and possessing counterfeit cash.

Justice Peter Davis sentenced Delander to nine years’ jail for trafficking, saying his “co-operation” with police prior to sentencing saw “a large amount of explosives … taken out of the black market”.

He will be eligible for parole on October 28, 2020.

The explosives stash included three pipe bombs, 40kg of ammonium nitrate, 32 sticks of “Powergel Magnum 365” and 39 electronic detonators hidden in bushland in the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, the court heard.

The largest cache was hidden in the Beerburrum State Forest on the Sunshine Coast, while some of the powergel explosives were hidden at Norwell on the Gold Coast.

They were seized in July and August last year and January this year.

“It is very much in the public interest for explosives to be taken out of public circulation,” Justice Davis said.

Crown Prosecutor Danny Boyle told the court Delander was not charged over the explosives and bombs, and did not implicate anyone.

Mr Boyle told the court Delander sold ice and ecstasy pills wholesale, for up to $40,000 per deal, to finance his lavish lifestyle and “luxury goods” for himself and then-girlfriend and drug trafficker Kylie Jean Gould who has already pleaded guilty.

Delander also admitted firing a gun from his $200,000 Mercedes Benz at a parked car, street signs and “general open areas” while skylarking on Helensvale Rd at Oxenford towards the Coombabah lakes conservative area in the early hours of September 29, 2015.

Delander had five videos of the shooting on his iPhone .
