Parko can do it again

- NATHAN EXELBY

GOLD Coast trainer Scott Morrisey is confident Parko will prove he’s no one-hit wonder when he runs at Ipswich tomorrow.

Parko exploded at his most recent start at the Gold Coast, winning by more than six lengths to post the quickest time of six 1200m races on the card on June 6.

“He had always worked like a horse with a lot of ability but, in the early bit, he probably worked too good,” Morrisey said.

“He would get to a race and it was the only time he’s ever been off the bit and he didn’t cope with it too well.

“But the penny dropped last time. I didn’t expect him to win as easily as he did, but I was pretty confident he would win.

“He’s a horse that works like one of the better horses in the stable.

“On the track, he beats others looking like he’s just cantering.

“Each time we put him against a better horse, but he does the same thing. He just does everything so easily.”

Parko has to come back to 1100m tomorrow but Morrisey feels he now has the street smarts to cope with that change.

“It might not be totally ideal, but he’s done everything right since his win,” he said.

“I don’t think he needs to lead to win but I would think he’s going to be right up there anyway.”

The two-year-old is shaping as one of the better betting races on the card. It comprises no less than eight last start or debut winners.

Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan’s Tullio is pressing Parko for favouritism after an easy last-start Ipswich win.

The Fire Trap won on the same day, albeit in lesser time.

Then there’s Spending My Time and Unconditional, who both impressed last time, having placed behind another of tomorrow’s runners, Spot On Spud, at their debuts.
