COAST SHIVERS UNDER COLD SNAP
FOR a typically warm part of Queensland, the Gold Coast has been hit with astonishingly cold weather since the weekend.
The chilly temperatures across parts of the city plummeted to their coldest on record yesterday, Coolangatta reaching 0.6C, Weatherzone said.
Nerang was just as brisk, notching just 1C.
The mercury was a tad more respectable, although still chilly, at the Seaway — dropping to 8.7C.
Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke expected temperatures today to 5C warmer in some of the Coast.
He said the level of shelter played a significant role in readings. “The Seaway is much closer to the coast, hence it’s more prone to the wind — that’s what helps keep the temperatures higher.
“The wind mixes the air up for it to get so cold. The very similar temperatures between Coolangatta and Nerang means they are similarly sheltered.”
At the moment, there’s a low pressure system off the NSW coast — maintaining brisk winds, and mostly clear skies.
The winds will remain over the next few days, though will gradually change direction.
“The air is going to warm up too,” Mr Dutschke said. “So that warming air and change in direction take temperatures closer to the June average.
“It does bring with it, the chance of showers as we get later in the week.”
The temperatures the Coast has experienced this week are five to seven degrees below the June average, he said.
Some relief is on the way, each suburb will be a degree or two warmer tomorrow.
