CROSS TO THE DARK SIDE

The season is right for this sturdy stout, warming those chilly winter nights with a little black magic

- WITH BOB ANTHONY

I HAVE said it numerous times before, but there’s nothing like heading to the dark side when the temperature drops.

Little Creatures has come to the party with its latest offering — Fuggle stout. Actually, it is known as The Fuggle is Real — stout in a can, but since that’s a bigger mouthful than the brew, just call it Fuggle.

The name suggests something out of a Harry Potter movie and the brew does have a slightly magical quality, especially considering it is a stout. If you think all stouts are in a Guinness style, you will be disappointed as this is “lighter” in body but still offers stout characteristics.

It’s a very smooth, mild drop with a healthy degree of roasted malt with a hint of fruitiness that you don’t normally find in stouts.

It has a milk coffee-coloured head, a delicious blackness and being a stout, a low degree of carbonation.

There’s plenty of flavour offering up a combination of plum, a hint of chocolate and, of course, roasted malt.

The result is very easy to

drink. It will provide an inner glow in winter without making you feel full after a couple.

If you enjoy a black brew, this is a step up offering a little more body.

It is very smooth but not too rich with just enough bitterness to have you licking the insides of your cheeks.

At 5.8 per cent, it is a good way to ward off winter chills.

It would be a great accompaniment to a dark dessert or some good cheeses at the end of the evening. It is a limited release so don’t delay.

“IT WILL PROVIDE AN INNER GLOW IN WINTER WITHOUT MAKING YOU FEEL FULL AFTER A COUPLE.”
