KATE MOON WALKING HER WAY TO MARATHON

- KATE PARASKEVOS

KATE Morris is moon boot walking to realising a dream.

The mental health worker at Gold Coast University Hospital has barely had a foot to stand on this month after competing the Ultra Cut Marathon at Nerang on June 2.

The hilly terrain on the 1.5km circuit took its on her feet. “The circuit had three hills,” Ms Morris said. “I was not used to running hills. Both of my feet have been stressed from 20 laps of the circuit.”

But she is refusing to let it ruin her goal of competing in her first Gold Coast Marathon next week.

Ms Morris will remove the protective moon boot the morning of her 10km race on June 30 and put it back on to help her prepare for the 42km marathon the next day.

The 40-year-old said finishing the Gold Coast Marathon would fulfil a dream: “It has always been a goal to run in a local marathon. The fact that it is the 40th marathon and I have recently celebrated my 40th birthday made it fate.”

In 2016, Ms Morris completed the 10km on marathon weekend. Last year, she ran the 5.6km and half marathon and went on to do the Marathon Du Medoc in France, triathlons and trail runs.

“I have tried to keep fit as I get older playing social touch, social tennis, hiking and just taking advantage of the Gold Coast climate for the beaches, and multiple hiking and running paths.”

Ms Morris is supporting the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation.

“Working at the hospital, I see first-hand the difference the foundation is able to make to different people’s inpatient experience.”

As for what she will do immediately after the marathon?

“I have already booked in a massage for the afternoon and plan to celebrate with wine and dinner somewhere in Broadbeach.”
