Academy gun ready to fire

THE Gold Coast Suns’ best academy product has been replaced in the senior side for the clash with Hawthorn tomorrow by the one who has left the greatest legacy.

Jacob Dawson has been named to make his AFL Round 14 game in Launceston.

The 18-year-old, who has been in the Suns academy since he was 13, will replace the injured Jack Bowes (quad) in the backline.

Bowes, taken with pick 10 in last year’s AFL draft, is regarded as the top talent to come from Gold Coast’s academy.

But what Gold Coast lose in skill, Dawson more than makes up for in sheer tenacity.

Gold Coast academy coach Andrew Raines said no one had made an impact on the club’s development system like Dawson, weighing 79kg and standing at 182cm, who sets the standards for every young player at the Suns.

“There’s no other player that’s left a legacy in the academy like Jacob,” Raines said.

“He captained our academy last year and really set the standard. We’re really proud of him.”

Dawson has been selected after consistent performances during nine games as part of the Suns’ NEAFL side in 2018, averaging 26 disposals and six tackles per game.

“It’s unreal, I still can’t believe it,” Dawson said.

“I’ve just been playing my role in the NEAFL and trying to build some good form, but to get the news that I’ll be making my debut is just so humbling.

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to play my role as part of the team and give us a chance to get the win.”

Dawson was upgraded from the rookie list last month as a replacement for the injured Pearce Hanley.

The Suns have recalled tall forward Peter Wright, while Rory Thompson (hamstring) and Bowes are out.
