WALK ON WILD SIDE FOR KOALA

-

A CURIOUS koala has walked into a building full of stray barking dogs and survived.

Animal Welfare League rehoming attendant Jake Murray said he was gobsmacked when a koala casually walked past him at the Coombabah shelter last week.

“I saw something in the corner of my eye, at first I thought it was a small dog,” he said. “But when I looked I went ‘oh it’s a koala’.

“(The koala) looked at me and just kept walking, and then went into one of the empty dog kennels.”

Before shooing the koala out of the shelter, Mr Murray had to get a photo.

“I squatted down by the dog bed and he came and sat right in front of me and was looking straight at me,” he said. “He was less than an arm’s length away.”

The Animal Welfare League team used blankets to chaperone the koala back out of the building where it then nonchalantly walked off to find a big gum tree.
