Kurrawa still reign

- CAMERON WARD

KURRAWA have cast off the winter blues to produce a red-hot performance at the Queensland IRB Championships.

The defending champions dominated yesterday’s finals on their way to comfortably securing back-to-back state titles in their home surf.

Broadbeach and Kirra ensured Gold Coast clubs swept the podium, finishing second and third respectively, with North Burleigh and Alexandra Headland rounding out the top five.

Kurrawa coach Scott Wheeler said it was great to win another title, and particularly special to do it on their home beach.

“Going back-to-back was never something that we really sat down and spoke about as a group, but to come here and give such a great performance at our home beach and in front of our own members has been great.

“The home-ground advantage obviously helped; we train at Kurrawa and we know what the surf’s like, but everyone just stepped up when they needed to.”

More than 320 competitors from across the state lined up across two days of action, putting their lifesaving skills to the test in a variety of rescue simulations and relay races.

With another state title under their belt, Wheeler said the Kurrawa’s focus would now shift to the Australian IRB Championships at Thirroul Beach in three weeks’ time.

“We have a crew in the state team and we have crews in the state development team, so it tells us that we’re mixing it with the best,” he said.
