GOING WILD FOR HOLIDAYS

There’s no shortage of activities for the children during the school break, which start at thee nd fo the week, and here are 10 of the best to keep them entertaine­d

Maia Audley, Lucas Audle and Anastasia Paramonov are going wild for the school holidays starting at the end of the week by taking par tina marine field day and learning about wildlife. See what else you can do on the Gold Coast during the break.

1. Marine Biologist Field Day

Digging turtle nests, investigat­ing micro-organisms and learning from the best, discover what it’s like to be a marine biologist for a day at Phil Hill Park, Paradise Point, on July 4. It’s an event the whole family can enjoy. Bookings are required. Phone:

2. Gold Coast Recreation Centre

Want to try out extreme sports? These two weeks might be your get for everything from abseiling to the high ropes course right in the middle of Tallebudge­ra Creek at the Gold Coast Recreation centre. There are full and half days available, with prices starting at $28 for kids eight and up.

3. Movie World

I know, I know, this one’s on every list. But hear me out: From July 1-15, Movie World is running its DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains event, where you can win best dressed prize, meet your favourite characters and enjoy a parade and light show every evening.

4. Community Centres Youth Program

It’s back-to-back entertainm­ent at different Community Youth Centres around the Gold Coast for kids aged 12-17, with everything from sports equipment to computers, from help writing resumes to getting your licence. There’s something for everyone to pick up some skills and have some fun.

5. ‘Learn to Surf’ Surf School

Don’t let the cold weather turn you off getting into the water this winter. For one-and-a-half hours, learn how to handle a surfboard, stand up and catch a wave at the beautiful Currumbin Alley beach. Contact 0411 080 112.

6. Jack and the Beanstalk Pantomime

If sports aren’t your thing, no problem! Take in a bit of culture and enjoy a classic tale at the Spotlight Basement Theatre in Benowa, as they run two daily pantomimes for everyone to enjoy. The sky truly is the limit for this great holiday time-filler!

7. Check out your local library

Gold Coast libraries are going all out for the school holidays, and there’s something for everybody. For the littler ones, there are dozens of games, shows and workshops on offer. For those older ones, you can learn how to make your own ‘zines or create cool accessorie­s. Check online to see just what’s

available near you.

8. David Fleay Wildlife Park

This place knows their stuff and how to put together an adventure for everybody these school holidays. We recommend the park’s Wildlife at Night events for stargazing and after-dark exploring, but check out their website to see all the cool activities available. Phone: (07) 5669 2051 for more.

9. Coastal Bike Challenge

Ride your bike for this coastal treasure hunt, solving riddles and prizes along the way. You’ll need to book a spot for this one. Phone 07 5552 8506.

10. Gold Coast Pet & Animal Expo

Finish the holidays on a high note at this expo on July 14-15 at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Broadbeach.
