Inquiry looks at voting age
AUSTRALIA’S youngest senator has suggested that Australians under 18 be allowed to vote in federal elections.
Parliament’s electoral matters committee has opened an inquiry into the Greens’ proposal to introduce voluntary voting for 16 and 17-year-olds and allowing electoral roll registration for those as young as 14. TheBill was proposed by Senator Jordon Steele-John, 23.
“I encourage all young people and youth-focused organisations to please contribute to the committee’s deliberations on this important democratic reform,” he tweeted yesterday.
