Rivals fire first shots

- with Joel McInnes

GET ready for the Battle of the Gold Coast.

Tomorrow both Gold Coast teams face off in Southern Basketball League and Queensland Basketball League action at Runaway Bay Indoor Sports Centre.

Being the first year that North Gold Coast Seahawks have entered the QBL, Gold Coast fans are salivating at the prospect of what happens this weekend.

Gold Coast teams both have a stronger record in the SBL and should prevail in the early games.

However, in the QBL the Seahawks Ladies have showed plenty of promise sitting seventh with a 6-4 record and will look to get a win in front of their home fans to keep their playoff hopes on track.

In the QBL men, the Seahawks men have struggled to get their first win of the season and will be on edge to win the local derby against the Rollers who have hit their stride finally this season with a strong performance last weekend.

Gold Coast president Jimmy Williams was quick to get on the front foot when he remarked: “I’m really looking forward to playing our little brother this Saturday. Sometimes you have to give them a smack to let them know what’s up.”

In response to this, Seahawks president Angelo Raguz said: “It’s good that the Gold Coast president is making noise. I guess us having a team making the playoffs must be hard to swallow.” The shots have been fired. There is a 5.30pm start for the women and 7.30pm for the men.

BOTH associations are hosting camps over the school holidays for junior athletes.

Gold Coast are hosting their QBL camp run by QBL players from July 3-5 and it’s based out of Kings Christian College.

The North Gold Coast Seahawks will host a threeday camp at Saint Stephens College at Coomera from July 3-5.

For more details on the camps, check the respective associations’ websites.
