There’s a Will but no way he can go distance over 21.1km

WILL Davison drove his Supercar through the pain of a fractured ankle in Darwin but his biggest frustration is the fact he has had to withdraw from the Gold Coast half marathon on Sunday.

Away from the racetrack, Davison is a keen runner and had been hard at training with his regular running group when he damaged his left ankle earlier this month.

“I had just literally taken off towards the Sundale Bridge along the running path, it was pitch dark, I was chatting to someone and just slipped off the edge of the path and put my full body weight on it,” he recalled. “I felt a huge crunch straightaway.

“I knew it was more than just a sprain unfortunately.

Even the physio looked at the scans and said ‘wow, you have done a good job’.”

The 35-year-old has made significant progress since but still needs to wear a moon boot.

“The ankle is a lot less swollen, I have got a lot more movement and there is a lot less pain,” Davison said at the GC600 launch at Nineteen on The Star Gold Coast.

“It’s just annoying that I

won’t be running in the Gold Coast half marathon this weekend which I was really pumped about.

“That’s the thing that annoys me more than anything.

“I have done the 10km a couple of times but I did the half last year and loved it.

“I was pumped to come back and better my time.

“I was hoping to go about 1:35. I’m not a great runner. I did about 1:40 last year and since then I have done a few half ironmans and I was certainly looking to better that.

“The conditions are generally so good, it’s such a flat course, nice and cold, really nice weather.

“I have just got to be patient. I’m not patient. It’s a lot better but I want it to be 100 per cent and it is still so far from it.

“They said it was really a four to six-week injury so we’re three weeks in.”

Davison admitted to having to “put on a brave face” through the Darwin Supercars round a fortnight ago, where he soldiered on to take solid placings of 13th and 14.

The 23Red Racing driver is adamant the injury will give him no concerns at the Townsville 400 next weekend.

Sporting and political identities flocked to Wednesday night’s launch of the GC600 motorsport festival, which runs from October 19-21.
