CHESS MASTERY IS ALL IN THE MIND
DUSAN Stojic is a chess master and today he’ll be competing against some of the world’s best at the 2018 Gold Coast Open Premier competition.
Since Thursday the local has played his way through the event, and has already faced the tournament leader, Australia’s second highest ranked player.
“He’s had to play some tough people,” tournament organiser Andrew Fitzpatrick said. “There’s a hell of a lot of concentration when you’re playing two games a day, some going for five or six hours.”
Mr Fitzpatrick said Mr Stojic’s rank of Fide master, after 20 years of chess, was about “two away from the very top international grand master rank — but it’s bloody hard to get there”.
This year’s event has set a new attendance record with 183 players, aged from seven to 70. Play will be held from 9am-2pm at the Arundel Hills Country Club today.
