CHRISTAN BREWS UP BATCH OF STREET ART

-

LOCAL artist Christan Sauman (right) has been selected as the artist in residence for July at the Burleigh Brewing company.

As a graffiti and street artist, Mr Sauman says his preferred medium is the spray can.

“There’s nothing better than rocking up to a 70m-long wall, with two dozen spray cans, put on your head phones and just spray,” he said.

“It’s so relaxing, I kind of go into like a trance and if I’m not careful I’ll just go all day without stopping even for a drink.”

Mr Sauman would spend hours as a kid drawing cartoons and creating characters but never intended to be an artist. Rather, it was something he “tripped and fell into”.

Much of his work consists of intricate floral patterned designs in his street-art style.

He said it was a common misconception that graffiti art was often associated with vandalism.

“Graffiti covers a much wider interest spectrum of the community and in some cases the artworks add value to the neighbourhood,” he said.

The Burleigh Brewing artist in residence program gives exposure to artists and engages the community with the depth of local creative talent.
