AS the Member for Tweed I have stood side-by-side with our community to fight for better facilities right across our region including the new Pottsville Ambulance Station, Pottsville Beach Public School upgrade, a new koala sanctuary and of course securing $534 million to build a new hospital for the Tweed, just to name a few projects.

However the new hospital is now at risk of major delays because of the NSW Labor Party who plan to have the project brought to a standstill.

Despite extensive community consultation and expert advice on the location of the new hospital, NSW Labor, Luke Foley and his candidate are insisting the project be delayed and used for election campaign material.

We cannot risk delays to this project. Lives depend on this. The health of our community depends on this.

Our current hospital is at capacity. People in our community are crying out for life-saving treatment that doesn’t require them to travel to another state, yet the NSW Labor Party think that now is a time to play politics. It is simply unacceptable. It is reckless and it puts people’s lives and the community’s health at risk.

Let’s be clear what is happening here; NSW Labor has announced they will build the hospital on a different site despite community feedback and expert advice, which begs the question, why?

I refuse to stand by and see this project hijacked for political purposes. The time for talk is done. Let’s get on with it and build a hospital our community needs and deserves.

If the Labor Party think they can push this project back in the hope of redirecting the funding to projects that suit their political agenda in the major cities, then they are in for a rude shock.

Together we fought for a new hospital, now together we will build a new hospital. GEOFF PROVEST MP, MEMBER FOR TWEED

CONGRATULATIONS to the team from Friends of Currumbin on the commencement of the Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway (Oceanway on the way, GCB, 4/7/18).

All credit to them firstly for their tireless campaigning which was necessary to even get the T2B Oceanway on the agenda and then for their unwavering commitment in petitioning the Council to commit to the project.

I know that the Friends of Currumbin and other members of the community spent many days standing in the sun petitioning and campaigning for this project. Well it’s been worth fighting for. Everyone involved can now feel very proud of their achievement. It is a great community asset on our public land which will soon be completed and able to be enjoyed by all of us. J CARRUTHERS

THE intent of eliminating plastic bags was to have less harm to the environment in Australia.

I purchased a reusable plastic shopping bag imported from Asia that can be reused 125 times for 10¢ (no big deal) if this bag is used on a picnic, fishing trip, beach, creek, or waterway and does not get blown away and is no longer usable!

My question is to the importers, does my 10¢ include the cost to import this harmful plastic bag into Australia and also export it back to Asia? I am not even going to ask why not “Made in Australia” when we have mountains of recycled plastic to make these bags without importing more from Asia. ANGELO, BIGGERA WATERS

TONY Abbott is right – Australia should quit the Paris climate treaty.

China, India, Russia, Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia will ignore Paris. USA has already quit and Japan even withdrew from the Kyoto Treaty. Germany will fail to meet its obligations and Poland will not try very hard. France relies heavily on nuclear power and naturally supports imposing Paris handicaps on competitors.

Australia has huge coal, gas, oil and uranium resources. To export these, while we hobble our industries with windmill power, is insane. VIV FORBES, WASHPOOL
