SOAK UP SUNSET SERENITY

- WYARALONG DAM

YOU’VE probably heard about Wyaralong Dam, but have you visited yet?

For a relaxing, scenic drive that ends with recreational activities all members of the family will enjoy (including your horse), it’s definitely time to check this place out.

And if you want to stay overnight, you can camp out too. It’s not difficult to find. Shaped like an odd tree root, the twisted water system was created on the outskirts of country town Beaudesert at the foot of Mt Joyce in 2011.

Turn onto Yugambeh Drive off Beaudesert-Boonah Road and park at the Meebun Day Use Area. Just a short walk away is the massive dam gates helping to contain and safely let through of water during heavy rains in the area.

From the Eastern Trail access, this is where you can play on more than 25km of mountain bike trails. The remaining trails – about 15km worth – include walking and horse riding trails from one side of the lake to the other. You can take your boat out to this access point, too. Or go fishing, though you will need a permit.

For kids, there’s a playground and viewing platform.

For those who wish to stay a little longer, wander down the multi-use trail and you can camp at the Ngumbi Remote Caming Area, with toilet facilities. There is also a canoe access point here.

There is a second recreational area at the Lilybrook Recreation Area on the western side.

But Wyaralong Dam is not just about doing stuff – there’s ample opportunity to simply rock up, sit down and then watch the sunset as you pop a few snags on the barbecue.
